Today many people will be celebrating. The air will be filled with the wonderful aroma of people cooking their favorite foods on the grill. The sky will be lit up at night with bursts of color, almost like it is humanity’s way of trying to recreate the glow of a sunset on the horizon.
Can you remember your first fourth of July? The excitement, the amazement, the shock to your senses the first time you saw a rocket shoot through the sky and explode radiantly in the sky! Can you remember the taste of your first hamburger, steak, or hot dog off of the red hot grill? It was an amazing time.
Over the years that feeling may have disappeared. The excitement has dulled, and your busyness of preparing food for family and friends has overtaken the joy of the day. It happens a lot as we get older, the simple innocent joys of experiencing things for the first time tend to dissipate just as ice melts on a sidewalk on a hot summer day. Wouldn’t it be great to recapture that excitement, that awe?
Can you remember the first time God touched your life? The excitement, the amazement, the shock to your emotional senses, and joy was so explosive inside of you while all the while being perfectly calm and at peace. As the years have past, do you still have that feeling? Has it grown? Has it waned? Maybe its time to go back and recapture that excitement, or perhaps experience it for the first time…
-until next time…
